Hyderabad, July 27, 2025 – In a significant medical breakthrough, KIMS-Sunshine Hospital has successfully performed South India’s first reverse shoulder replacement surgery using donor bone graft, setting a new benchmark in advanced orthopaedic care.
The complex procedure was led by Dr. B. Chandrasekhar, Director of Shoulder Surgery, along with a dedicated team of expert orthopedic surgeons at the hospital’s Sunshine Bone and Joint Institute.
The surgery was performed on a 27-year-old South African man who sustained a complex fracture of the proximal humerus (upper arm bone) with severe bone loss following a traumatic accident. Given the patient’s young age and the complexity of the injury, the case posed a significant surgical challenge.
The team successfully executed a reverse shoulder arthroplasty with proximal humerus allograft, reconstructing the severely damaged bone using donor bone tissue from a certified bone bank. This pioneering approach required advanced implants, high-level surgical expertise, and precision grafting techniques.
Dr. B. Chandrasekhar stated:“Shoulder replacement surgery is highly effective in reducing pain and improving shoulder movements, especially in cases where the bone or muscles are severely damaged. We’re thrilled to have achieved this milestone and look forward to continuing to provide world-class orthopaedic care.”
Reverse shoulder replacement is an advanced surgical method used in situations where traditional shoulder mechanics are disrupted due to trauma, arthritis, or rotator cuff damage. This achievement reinforces KIMS-Sunshine Hospital's commitment to delivering state-of-the-art orthopedic treatments for even the most complex medical cases.
