12-Year-Old Akshara Awakens from a 3-Month Coma After Successful Medulloblastoma Surgery @ Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City

Updated: 11 minutes ago

Hyderabad, December 12, 2024: 12-year-old Akshara, a bright student in a private school, began showing unusual signs of drowsiness during class. Her teachers initially dismissed it as fatigue from a heavy meal, but the persistent episodes raised concerns. Alerting her parents, the teachers advised immediate medical attention.

Upon consulting several doctors, Akshara’s parents were devastated to learn she had a medulloblastoma, a rare brain tumor pressing against the brainstem and entangled with critical nerves. Due to its complexity and risks, including potential paralysis or life-threatening complications, several doctors hesitated to operate.

Desperate, the family approached Dr. Sreekanth Reddy, Senior Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon at Medicover Hospitals. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Reddy decided to proceed with the surgery, successfully removing the tumor and saving Akshara’s life. However, post-surgery complications led to hydrocephalus, necessitating a second procedure to place a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt.

Following the surgeries, Akshara remained in a coma for three months, with Dr. Reddy and his team providing round-the-clock care. One night, the family’s prayers were answered when Akshara unexpectedly woke up and spoke to her father, marking a turning point in her recovery. Subsequent scans confirmed her complete recovery.

Dr. Reddy emphasized the importance of precise surgery and timely intervention in saving Akshara’s life. Grateful for their daughter’s miraculous recovery, Akshara’s family honored Dr. Reddy and his team, including anesthesiologist Dr. Nithya Palapati, for their exceptional efforts in restoring happiness to their lives.
