KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospital Leads Pediatric Bone Health Awareness on World Pediatric Bone and Joint Day

Hyderabad, Telangana | October 18, 2024: On the occasion of World Pediatric Bone and Joint Day, we aim to raise awareness about common pediatric bone and joint problems that are often easily treatable. Early recognition and prevention are key to ensuring children grow up with strong and healthy bones.

Children constitute about 24% of India’s population, accounting for one-fourth of the total. Some of the most frequently encountered pediatric bone and joint issues include.

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH): A condition where the hip joint is improperly formed, leading to instability or dislocation.

Rickets: Caused by a deficiency in vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate, which weakens the bones.

Injuries at Home: Accidents like door-trap injuries and falls from heights, which can result in fractures or joint damage, are preventable with the right precautions.

To address these concerns, KIMS-SUNSHINE Hospital, Begumpet, under the guidance of Dr. Vidyasagar Chandankere, Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon (Hong Kong) and Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, is conducting a special awareness program on this day to educate parents and caregivers.

The Hidden Risk of Vitamin D Deficiency

Asymptomatic vitamin D deficiency is very common in children. Given their rapid growth, they have a higher risk of developing this deficiency, which can hinder their growth, weaken muscles, and lead to bone deformities. Fortunately, this can be prevented with regular exposure to sunlight during outdoor play, which naturally stimulates the production of vitamin D in the skin.

Safety at Home

Creating a safe environment at home is vital to prevent common injuries. Parents should take steps to ensure that doors and windows do not pose a risk of trapping children’s fingers and that open areas at heights, such as balconies, are secured to prevent accidental falls.

Promoting Healthy Lifestyles for Children

In today’s fast-moving world, encouraging children to adopt healthy lifestyles is more important than ever. Limiting screen time on mobile devices and tablets, while promoting outdoor physical activities, is essential for their physical and mental well-being.

Balanced Diet for Healthy Growth

Children’s diets should be free of highly processed foods like burgers, fries, and sugary drinks. Instead, a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, especially calcium and vitamin D, will promote bone health. Daily outdoor play for at least one hour will further support their bone development, improve reflexes and posture, and strengthen their connection with nature.
